Mulberry paper
In the north of Thailand grows a special tree: the Mulberry. The special thing is that the bark of the tree can easily be peeled off after the rainy season, after which it immediately grows again. This characteristic was discovered hundreds of years ago by the Karen tribe living in the far north of Thailand.

The leaves of the Mulberry are food for the silkworms and the bark is the basis for the Mulberry paper. The tree grows in the wild, but is also planted for the production of this beautiful paper.

The peeled bark is boiled and crushed in large kettles. The paper pulp is dissolved in water, scooped evenly by hand onto large shovels and, for example, petals or dried leaves are added. Now the scoop windows are put in the sun to dry. When the sheets are dry, they are removed from the grids, smoothed and checked. The paper is ready to be dyed or printed (batik) and possibly processed into products.

In the north of Thailand there are many small workshops where the paper is made. The products are made by hand and are an important source of employment there.
